Children's & Senior's Vision Q & A

Why do seniors and children need special eye care?

Both seniors and children have special care requirements because eyes and vision both tend to change more quickly at both ends of the age spectrum. In children, the eyes are still developing, and even minor problems can interfere with learning. Seniors can develop vision problems for a number of reasons, including age, disease and even medications. Poor vision among seniors results in debilitating falls and can have a significant impact on quality of life. Evaluating both children and seniors for potential vision or eye-related health problems requires special skill to determine when a vision abnormality might be part of a larger health issue.

How often should seniors have an eye exam?

Men and women over 60 years of age should see their eye doctor every year, especially if they or their family members have a history of diabetes, high blood pressure or eye disease like glaucoma or macular degeneration. Senior patients should see their doctor any time they experience a noticeable change in vision to be evaluated for serious eye diseases or systemic diseases that can affect vision.

How often should children have an eye exam?

Children should have their first eye exam at about six months of age to identify any genetic eye health problems or vision issues which may require early intervention. They should be checked again at three years of age to ensure their eyes and vision are developing normally. At three years of age, children are able to participate in their exam and answer simple questions that can help a doctor uncover subtle signs of vision loss or eye disease. Subsequent exams should be conducted before entering first grade and every two years after that, unless your doctor recommends more frequent exams.
