Case Presentation: Contact Lens Awareness

Normally, a healthy cornea should be 100% transparent and free of blood vessels to allow clear, crisp vision. This patient is a long time contact lens wearer who purchased contacts from a non-licensed location and developed a serious corneal condition that nearly left her blind in this eye. Fortunately, a stat referral and culture saved her sight but left her only seeing 20/80 even with correction and treatment. In the picture, the cloudy area in the upper left quadrant of the cornea is a scar with neovascularization (new blood vessels).
