Case Study: Improper Application of Eyeliner causes Dry Eye

Dry eye is a common condition that affects millions of individuals throughout the world. While there are several potential causes for this condition, few patients are aware that their makeup use may be causing or exacerbating the problem. Improproper application of eye makeup not only leads to dry eye, but can cause several other eye issues as well including:

  • burning
  • redness
  • tearing
  • blurry vision

A patient who recently visited our office came in complaining of dry eye and was looking for the cause of the problem. After examining her with the slit lamp microscope, Dr. Silani realized that her eyeliner had been applied along the water line (the area behind the eyelashes). This led to a blockage of her Meibomian (oil) glands which was the ultimate cause of her dry eye.

The Meibomian (oil) glands are responsible for keeping the eye healthy and moist. They are located near the base of the eyelashes so next time you are applying makeup be careful not to apply it to this area!
