Dry Eye Disease TFOS DEWS 2 Study Treatment Approach

There is a systematic & scientific approach to diagnosing & treating dry eye disease (DED).

Here’s a brief overview of the TFOS DEWS 2 dry eye protocol for managing Ocular Surface Disease, specifically DED/MGD:

Step 1: Patient education, identify external factors as well as lifestyle/environmental changes and advise use of proper at-home dry eye kit items.

Step 2: Medications, punctal plugs, & office-based devices: blephex, thermal modalities (TearCare, Lipiflow, ILux, MiboFlo), IPL.

Step 3: Therapeutic CLs (ie scleral lenses), autologous serum and Regenereyes.

Step 4: Amniotic membranes, surgical intervention (ie cauterizing Punctal opening, tarsorrhaphy, etc).
